Tuesday, July 27 2021
Prof. Yoshinori Ohsumi is a Japanese cell biologist who has been awarded by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. His research focused on mechanisms underlying autophagy. According to the research, in the lysosomes its components are processes for reuse. In the early 1990s, he conducted a series of experiments with yeast, where he detected autophagy and genes important for the process. His groundbreaking revelations unveiled the ability of cells to manage infections and malnutrition, the causes of neurological and hereditary diseases, and cancer.
Accreditations and Academic Quality Improvement Cell (AAQIC) in collaboration with School of Health Sciences (SHS) organized an online enlightening session with Prof. Yoshinori Ohsumi. The webinar was officially commenced by a welcome note from Dr Muhammad Aslam, Rector UMT. In the session, he discussed discoveries of the mechanisms for autophagy and his experience of 31 years of research. The participants of the session were faculty members and students from SHS and AAQIC. It was further followed by a knowledgeable Q&A session where he addressed the participant’s queries. The participants found the session very intellectual and useful in their field of work.
