Renowned Poets Attend Mushaira at UMT to Mark Pakistan's 70th Independence Celebrations

Wednesday, August 09 2017

A poetic symposium (mushaira) was held at UMT to observe Pakistan’s 70th Independence Day. Renowned poet and literary icon Amjad Islam Amjad presided over the mushaira whilst key poets Saima Kamran, Saud Usmani, Abbas Tabish, Hameeda Shaheen, Ambreen Salahuddin, Sajjad Baloch, Shaheen Firdous and others presented their poetry one after another.

Addressing the event, Dr Muhammad Aslam, Rector UMT, said that Pakistan came into being after paying a heavy price and giving sacrifices of many lives. He appreciated all the poets who took out their precious time and presented their selective verses dealing with Pakistan and its history, national unity, Independence Day and the current scenario. “The role of poets and literary figures in the struggle for Pakistan was critical. And one of the founders of Pakistan was a poet; Iqbal whose poetry ignited the sentiment for freedom in Muslims and awakened them from slumber”, the Rector said.

On this occasion, UMT students presented a tabloid to represent the country’s culture and national values. The event concluded with giving away of souvenirs to the guests.
